National Public Radio aired a remake of the Orson Welles “War of the Worlds” radio broadcast on the 50th anniversary of the Mercury Theatre play in 1988.

It was produced and directed by David Ossman and starred Jason Robards, Steve Allen (who as a youth listened to the 1938 broadcast), Douglas Edwards, Scott Simon, Terry Gross, and numerous others with updated music and sound effects. It was nominated for a Grammy Award for “Best Spoken Word or Nonmusical Recording”

This is definitely worth a listen. I came across it a couple of years ago, having no prior idea of its existence.
