The original teleplay that became the classic Star Trek episode, with an expanded introductory essay by Harlan Ellison, The City on the Edge of Forever has been surrounded by controversy since the airing of an “eviscerated” version — which subsequently has been voted the most beloved episode in the series’ history. In its original form, The City on the Edge of Forever won the 1966-67 Writers Guild of America Award for Best Teleplay. As aired, it won the 1967 Hugo Award.
The City on the Edge of Forever is, at its most basic, a poignant love story. Ellison takes the listener on a breathtaking trip through space and time, from the future all the way back to 1930s America. In this harrowing journey, Kirk and Spock race to apprehend a renegade criminal and restore the order of the universe. It is here that Kirk faces his ultimate dilemma: a choice between the universe — and his one true love.
This edition makes available the astonishing teleplay as Ellison intended it to be aired. The author’s introductory essay reveals all of the details of what Ellison describes as a “fatally inept treatment” of his creative work. Was he unjustly edited, unjustly accused, and unjustly treated?

Didn’t know about this little gem, thanks for posting

Thank you!!!
I had seen Ellison on one of those after-midnight talk shows back in the early 80s. He was really irritated with the treatment This script received.
He spent a lot of time referring to television in particular referring to them as
“Prurilescent Pusmires” …and quoted at length from his book ‘The Glass Teat’. It’s amazing how that book still nails the state of television and many viewers all these decades later. You can still get this book and his follow-up book ‘The Other Glass Teat” at Amazon.
If you’re a fan of Ellison’s writing, you’ll enjoy these two books.
Many thanks to anansisan for sharing this!

Two warnings:
1) If you’re familiar with Ellison’s once considerable oratory prowess, you’re in for a shock: the introductory material, which the author reads, was recorded after he’d had a stroke. Of course Ellison’s ego — similar to that of aging rock singers who can no longer hit the notes — won’t allow him to admit he can no longer do what he used to do. It’s painful to listen to him slur his words and stumble over material he himself wrote.
2) Posting material copyrighted by Ellison without permission is a dangerous practice. The man is lawsuit-happy. He’s sued over defamation. He sued James Cameron over The Terminator and Andrew Nichol over In Time, despite neither movie bearing any real resemblance to the work he claims they ripped off. He sued AOL, among others (including the poster), over stories of his that were posted on newsgroups. He’s sued some hundreds of people for posting his work on the internet without permission. He might even sue me for mentioning how much he sues people.

@Alan: I didn’t know Ellison had a stroke. Now it makes sense to me - I thought he was stoned or drunk or something because of how he slurred his words when he narrated.
…and you’re correct about how lawsuit-happy he is, he’s famous for it.
Thanks for the head’s up! :)

Please seed.
Been looking forward to this! Is this the only full cast version, or is there only one version and this one just happens to be labelled “full cast?”
Thanks!
