Even in science fiction, supposedly the genre of limitless possibility, where everyone is invited to the adventure, heterosexual, heteroromantic, and cisgendered are considered the default, to the extent that everything else is “deviation,” and must be eyed with suspicion.
Lightspeed was founded on the core idea that all science fiction is real science fiction and that science fiction is vast. It is inclusive. Science fiction is about people, and queer people, no matter how they identify, are a big part of that. They always have been. They’re just sometimes harder to see. So, in the interests of visibility, Queers Destroy Science Fiction! shows just how wide the spectrum of sexuality and gender identity can really be.

No. Queers have not destroyed it. Queers with an agenda however have done a fair share of damage. If you wish to write a book with a queer character then tell your sci-fi story. Make the characters orientation part of the story but not THE STORY.
Good example is:
Mercedes Lackey and The Last Herald-Mage Series
(Fantasy I know but an outstanding example none the less)

With a title like that, I can only respond, “If you say so”

A lot of Sci-Fi/Military Sci-Fi today involves Colonization of other Planets due to persecution over race/religion etc. of their social group by others on Earth, hopeful of living in a community of their peers only. That being the case how would a Gay or Lesbian colony work? Cloning is a dead end due to “generational clone degeneration” so no babies equals single generation colonies with zero future, which wouldn’t make for good Sci-Fi reading.
Even if a gay author makes a single gay/lesbian character the leading role in his/her book it still leaves that character as a minority and human nature being what it is I don’t see said character lasting long even in an otherwise diverse social group.
I guess the gay author could write about a gay colony who took female breeding stock along to keep as lobotomized slaves in a baby factory, although I don’t see how said colony would survive long enough to establish on a new world, as the logistics of feeding said slaves and the rest of the colony, let alone other resources.
