  PrettyRandom, “homophobia” is a weasel word. It does not exist. There is no such thing as a widespread irrational phobia/fear of homosexuals. People are angry about this issue, not afraid. It is an ideological stance, not a phobia. So the term is “anti-gay.”

  Card said some things about homosexuals in the 1970s and 1980s that he now regrets and regards as overly extreme after going through a long process in which he wrote the Empire books, which are essentially apologia for political moderation / against political extremism. So he has moderated his stance a great deal and repudiated some of his earlier views. He’s still not in favor of “gay marriage” or other special ‘gay rights” but neither are millions of other Mormons in the world.

  Now, if you are such a bigot that you want to boycott anybody who’s a Mormon and holds Mormon views on sexual ethics, then you can just skip right over this, but the rest of us can appreciate one of the world’s greatest living science fiction authors without needing them to reinforce our own beliefs on every issue.

  InsaneCrazyMad: This isn’t really the place for this conversation, but since you started it:

  a) “Homophobia” may be accurate in a certain sense, since some studies have demonstrated that people who aggressively dislike gays may fear the desires they themselves have buried within them.

  b) Card has not repudiated his earlier statements; in fact, he reiterated them in the 90s and 2000s (http://www.verbicidemagazine.com/2013/11/07/homophobia-quotes-orson-scott-card-controversy-bigot-enders-game/).

  c) The right of law-abiding, consenting adults to marry isn’t a “special” right, it’s a basic one. And the notion that sex is a moral issue at all is in itself medieval. It’s a biological imperative, and the lawful sexual practices of others don’t interest or concern intelligent adults.

  d) You’re the only person who mentioned boycotts. Calling Card one of the world’s greatest SF writers is a bit of stretch, but you’re entitled to your opinion. My opinion is that Mormonism deserves the exact same respect as all other faiths: none at all. Certainly, the faithful may believe what they like, but they may not impose it on anyone else. Nice try at turning the accusation around on the accuser, Fox News style, by the way, saying that if we object to bigots like Card, that makes us bigots.

  There are “norms” and those “norms” change as society changes. What his views are on sexuality and acceptable norms differ little from what until a few years back was exactly what the pope of the day professed.

  To some, a person who is Gay is a pervert, others do not have a problem. Because a norm is a social aspect of society and open to change, critisising a persons opinons regarding the subject is narrowminded (No critisism implied) As who is to say what tomorrow’s norms will be? Maybe being Straight will one day in the future to be considered a perversion - “Old Man’s War” to quote a senario.

  Regardless of his opinions or beliefs, Orson Scott Card is a terrific writer and Although I know there is a movemnet in the Gay Comounity to ban his books based upoin his belief - I remenber the same “Crap” with the “Satanic Verses” but at least there, it was the written contents that were considered taboo. Now it seems that small minded people what to include a persons opinions as to whetheran author is a good writer. There Loss thankfully as, as of yet the “Thought Police” are not a reality - lol

  You claiming that all religions deserve zero respect is bigotry. People who don’t respect other people’s beliefs are as guilty of being bigots as the anti-gay bigots they are against. All bigotry is still bigotry.

  People boycott all of Card’s works based on one view he has, and that is irrational intolerance. None of his work is secretly about how evil gay people are; he writes with less implicit vilification than C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien do. The only thing in the Ender Saga that I can even relate to homophobia is the use of the term “Buggers,” where the Formicans literally ARE bugs. His character and his body of work are different entities. Mozart ate shit, so does that mean that his music is about eating shit and you support eating shit if you listen to it?

  There’s no reason to deprive yourself of a FREE download of a very good author’s collection–and reddit’s top pick for best single sci-fi novel of all time–just because you are intimidated by the man’s personal views. That sentiment is childish and does nothing to actually fight homophobia, if that’s what you intend to do.

  Thanks for the collection uploader. Thanks for the comments, I found them all extremely entertaining. Censorship used to be a dirty word. How come people who demand tolerance are so intolerant of other humans that are intolerant? I found life much easier to separate the artist/author whatever from the art/writing.

  b) My claim that all religions deserve no respect is not bigotry; it’s simple good sense. I don’t believe in magic, the supernatural or gods. No evidence for those things exist, hence I don’t respect belief in them (while at the same time respecting anyone’s right to believe any stupidity they choose, as long as they don’t try to impose it on others). Sorry if that’s too subtle for you.

  c) There’s no reason to deprive myself of a FREE download? It really isn’t free, you know. It’s illegally posted here, so try not to be too self-righteous. At any rate, I in no way advocated a boycott of anything. I like some of Card’s work. I just don’t like Card.

  Wow. So little of these comments have anything to do with the actual content they’re supposed to be relating to. I guess mine won’t either.

  Personally, I find it uncomfortable to be around people whose sexual preferences are their sole identity, whatever those preferences might be. I wish they’d just keep their private business… you know, PRIVATE. That is implied in the approach of ‘live and let live’. I personally don’t like or approve of homosexuality, but we have worse things than that now and anyway, it isn’t illegal. Not here, at any rate. And it’s been with us a long time. After all, as with the word ‘Sodomy’, the word ‘Lesbian’ also comes form a place in the ancient world. In fact, in the Iliad, we have… Odysseus, is it? Maybe someone else, it’s hard to keep everyone straight, giving out Lesbians as gifts. Funny how language is, eh? Anyway, they keep their bedroom stuff in the bedroom, I’ll do the same, I won’t lecture them on what an abomination homosexuality is, they don’t lecture me on… oh, I don’t know, being narrow-minded when it comes to bedroom experimentation, maybe.

  As for the views of the author, H.P. Lovecraft is one of my favorites. None can deny he was a blatant racist, and you know what? I don’t have a problem with that. No one is perfect and in the time and place in which he lived, his views were not inappropriate, even if we would not find such opinions appropriate today. All things change. But Lovecraft’s accomplishments and influence is undeniable. In short, art may be shaped by the artist but is NOT the artist. A good author will produce a good story, regardless of personal beliefs because it’s the story that matters. A bad author will make his or her story into propaganda to push an ideopolitical agenda, and do so at the expense of the story, and since it’s the story that matters, the result is bad. That’s what’s wrong with modern entertainment: an attempt to pander to a modern audience that does not in fact exist and to push ideology primarily espoused by activists and special interest groups but anathema the majority of people who would be the ones actually paying to consume it. Time was, entertainment could present you with new ideas and ways of looking at things and invite you to consider it. Now, it beats you over the head with it if you dare disagree and if you criticize it, you’re outright attacked. But since the whole thing runs on money, it should eventually be self-correcting. After all, people can’t be forced to pay to see what they don’t like. And anyway, as everyone knows, you should never meet your heroes. They’re always a disappointment, because at the end of the day, they are just people like you and I, just as flawed as we ourselves. It is wrong to expect perfection and unfair to them.

  See what I did here? I haven’t talked about the torrent either, as is custom and practice in this thread.

  So now. I’m actually looking forward to a perusal of this torrent. I have few of Card’s books in my library and no audio media. He’s an author that has simply slipped through the cracks. I’m rather curious what I’ve missed. If I like what I hear, I’ll add some to said collection by way of Audible.
