Actually the description her is a generic one for the whole series.
“The Road to the Rim” has the very young Ensign Grimes setting out as a passenger en route to join his first Survey Service posting, but on the way there is an encounter with pirates. The first half seems at times quaint, with details like smoking pipes and cigars in space seeming unlikely, but when the action starts it’s quite gripping.

Thanks Gweilo. ♥:) This is a good writer. I’ve never heard of him but I was testing playback on book 5…got hooked and didn’t want to finish my current “read”. lol

Chandler was probably Australia’s most successful SF writer. I met him once at an SF convention, got him to sign some of my Grimes books.
Chandler was a real merchant seaman captain. The (space) shipboard life he writes is based on that.
In one story Grimes travels between universes and meets Chandler.
It’s too bad these weren’t recorded by an Australian company, the narrator tries to do the accent but isn’t convincing, aside from that they’re pretty good readings.
