The surprise attack within the Auriga Star System was worse than brutal; it was heinous, leaving the US Navy’s 3rd Fleet decimated.
Thousands of crew are reported dead, including the ship’s captain. Reluctantly, the young XO, Galvin Quintos, will be taking command of the fleet’s crippled dreadnaught, the USS Hamilton, while doing his best to bring fleet survivors back to Earth. To make matters worse, there’s a murderer running loose on board the ship, critically low fuel levels, and the Grish are back, in fast pursuit and ready to finish what they’d started. Only by sheer luck - and a good measure of cagey smarts - will Quintos be able to rise to the challenge.

Do you like military space operas with a daring Captain who risks it all to save the day from the thousand-suckered tentacles of some evil space lord? So do I. So much so that I consider myself kind of an expert in these types of stories, and I have to say - sometimes I wonder who enjoys some of these series and what that says about me as a person. This series is so corny and simple that I just don’t understand why there are 23 NOVELS in this series. Clearly people are listening. Here are some of my issues with this series - first, like many fantasy novels its a straight sequence of events, but the events that occur are just so silly and random that I find it distracting. That’s not truly a mark against, some may like the fact that in the second novel (I got halfway through it, I will discuss that below) the rebuilt spaceship has a full replica of a small US town inhabited by robots and 18-wheelers making deliveries of food. That is on the battleship. And if the author was doing this as a weird infinite-improbablity-drive type of thing, ok that’s cool. But no, its just a set piece to show how badass the main character is, which leads me to my next actual issue: this series suffers from main-character-syndrome, where the main character is just such a badass alpha-chad, or whatever the kids call them, it just makes me laugh and not in a good way. We get it, hes awesome, women love him, he’s a tough hero, but wounded at heart with his PTSD, blah blah blah. Lets talk about the stakes. There are none. There are enemies - such as the ships chaplain who is so stereotypical EVIL that I’m surprised that he didn’t have a handlebar mustache to twirl while he stroked his white Persian cat and gazed through his monocle. And then the evil Trillionaire and evil Boss-Admiral. Its just so, well its basic. Very very basic. You may ask then, why did you start the second one? Well, I barely finished the first one and was going to leave it at that but I was jogging and had nothing to listen to, so I put it on. I got about 3 or 4 chapters in before I remembered why I didn’t like the first one. But back to my main discussion point: who listens to these so much that there are 23 of them? I have a theory on that. I think there are a lot of guys out there that put themselves into the main character role in some of these books, same with zombie fiction - its a fantasy play type of thing. Can’t say i haven’t kind of done that before, it would be rad to pilot a starship. I’ll just say this, nothing wrong with the hero saving the day, but its got to have a well defined and compelling story, not just Capt. Chad bumbling into one scenario after another where everyone loves him, he’s awesome, women just throw themselves at his feet, yadda yadda so forth. Boarding for my plane has started, must go now. I wonder if anyone will read this far and if my words will persuade or dissuade from listening. Some might find this a positive review depending on what they are looking for!
