An anonymous guest uploaded George Guidall’s excellent reading of Dune in FLAC format here (https://audioscifi.com/abss/dune-1993-recorded-books-version-frank-herbert/) back in January. Thanks if you’re reading this, I’ve now listened to it & it was flawless.
I wanted a copy in m4b & I wanted it in proper book chapters, rather than hundreds of short tracks.
So, I formatted it into chapters. Ran it through some gentle noise reduction for the little bit of background rumble & then EQ’d up the bass so it sounded less thin.
Also included is the semi dramatised Audio Renaissance & Macmillan Audio versions of,

Chapterhouse Dune read by Simon Vance, Scott Brick, Euan Morton & Katherine Kellgren
The Audible versions of these books have one chapter per disc, resulting in 70 minute long chapters that have breaks in the middle of scenes. I fixed that for all six books.

Impressive, thanks for your hard work. I’ve only listened to a full cast reading of Dune, which I thought couldn’t be beat, but there’s so much talk about George’s narration … time to give it a listen.

I also fixed a verbal stumble right up front in chapter One. Davina Porter mispronounced Bene Gesserit the first time she said it. It was while talking about “Taking special care” so it bothered me enough to fix it.

I don’t like the particularly, sometimes the dramatised bits work well, the Paul vs the Gom Jabbar scene is great, but I found the last hour or so really confusing.
I hadn’t heard the actors enough to recognise their voices and once they start acting, Simon Vance stops telling you who is speaking. Fortunately the sequels (and the Guidall reading) don’t have this problem.

OMG!
I just spent some time converting the ‘Guest’ ‘Dune’ M4b version into MP3 files with a weak attempt at splitting the files, so I could play them on my tiny dumb Nokia phone (which is a very good audio player).

donleavy, If you really need mp3 I recommend using foobar2000 both to play the m4b and to convert to mp3.
It’s what I used to create the m4b’s in the first place. As long as you use LAME it should preserve the gapless chapters too.

Of course. If you use uTorrent you can just un-tick the items you don’t want. None of it is zipped together.

Just finished book one, and found that some times there was multiple voice actors, and at others it was all recited by one narrator, and it would keep changing betweenthe two styles at seemingly random parts of the story. Is this a bug or a feature?

Would you mind sharing the settings/parameters you used for noise reduction and equalizing? You did a really good job and I would like to be able to replicate it.

Sorry this reply is so late. I used Audacity and it’s ‘get noise profile’ subtraction noise reduction setting. IIRC there was a background rumble on Dune hearable between the talking. It wasn’t to bad, but could easily be removed, so I did.
The default settings need taming IMHO, so I will have dropped the Noise Reduction (dB) from 12 to 9 or 10 and changed the Frequency Smoothing (bands) from 1 to 12.
Because the rumble had a bass component, the resultant files sounded thinner than before the NR was applied. So I use the adjust ‘Bass and Treble’ to thicken it up again. I did this by ear, comparing it to the original unaltered file until it sounded just about the same. I don’t remember exactly but I think it was probably 1.5 to 2 dB of bass boost.

Wasn’t sure how the mixture of fullcast and solo Vance reading was going to be, but i actually really like it. All the voices are well chosen and easy to listen to.

Hey! Excellent share thank you! However there are 2 Dune books, files named as:
01 Dune [Simon Vance, Orlagh Cassidy, Scott Brick, Euan Morton & others].m4b 585.09 MBs
and
Dune [George Guidall & Davina Porter].m4b 456.61 MBs
I’m aware they are different versions but when I open them in Apple Books they merge together back to back and become a single file of 40 hours. I was a bit confused at first but I fixed it by syncing only one of the files to my iPhone and Mac Books app. I thought I’d let you know because I don’t know if it’s a bug or intentional? No biggie thanks!

where can I find a dune audiobook that isnt this stupid audio drama. they skip half the words and mispronounce things its annoying and personally unlistenable yet its the only audiobook that seems to exist for one of the most famous and influential scifi books.
