  Most people who knows this series and writer knows what books it includes, but they also probably also have these recordings and if they download it is to check if these are better versions (as I do)

  For all others listing what books this torrent includes would probably be a positive.
  Just my opinion.

  The recommended books mentioned, plus C.J. Cherryh’s Alliance–Union universe (future history), & Foreigner universe. Lots of complex, political intrigue, realism & psychological depth.

  On M. Banks: I started w “Consider Phlebas” cos it was the 1st chronologically. It’s different to the later ones. The 2nd (Player of Games) & 3rd (Use of Weapons) are extremely good.

  kriskodisko: I suggest reading them in order. They largely take place chronologically, though with always different characters and often vast spans of time between books. Still, there are some oblique references to events from earlier books so that’s my 2c.

  I wonder why you seem to have disregarded the ten m4b posted by Lieve on ABB as a source though?
  Especially for “Matter” - even if you dislike the m4b container (which seems to be the case), any custom VBR-mp3 conversion should still sound a lot better than the 128kbps CBR-mp3 version that is included in this torrent.

  I have searched the world over (twice) and never found another Sci Fi writer who, for me, ever came close to Iain M. Banks. We lost a special SF author when he died.

  I even like his non-Culture SF. Some of his “literary novels” (published under the name Iain Banks) are okay (& his literary fiction is actually more popular in the UK). But, there is something in his writing I could never find other Sci Fi writers - or in the many recommendations of “similar” or “smarter” SF authors - that you can find in the articles (& the comments) of the many columns on this topic.

  I used to keep lists of these suggestions - and I gave them all a fair shot! Some were good, but for me, none were ever even in his league. (Although I’ll have to give C.J. Cherryh’s listed trilogies a try. I liked her first book - And, I’ve never found Caesar to be wrong about anything on this site).

  So, I’m interested in suggestions too. (But, I been at this game over a decade, so the usual suspects - like Morgan etc. just never did it for me.)

  I suspect you’ve been looking for a while too. So if & when, I’ll be waiting for your list. (But mine is blank.)

  I reckon I’m wrong on most stuff, mooose! But my intentions are good (Oh Lord, please don’t let me be misunderstood).

  Banks was the reigning monarch of clever sf. You can only really find authors striving in a similar vein, rather than truly superior artists.

  Cherryh is a major undertaking; very prolific, with multiple books in her various series (”serieses” as Gollum might say).
  I think Herbert is the spiritual grandaddy of clever in the genre, rather than the beloved raygun/death ray & Big Dumb Object approach.

  Well damn, Horstman. You make a lot of sense.
  I gathered the Peter Kenny versions into one torrent years ago when they were quite difficult to find. I recently found myself having to re-create my library and thought I’d update it and share.
  My knowledge of lossy formats is admittedly lacking, and especially when it comes to audiobook-specific ones. I glossed over Lieve’s uploads because at a glance the bitrate seemed not to be an improvement. In retrospect, they look superior to what I’ve offered here. Thanks for pointing it out.
  I imagine it would be disrespectful to Lieve to throw his work into a single torrent (though I’m tempted, for the sake of having everything in one place).

  mooose, I feel your pain. I just couldn’t believe it when I discovered Iain M Banks on this very site with a copy of Use of Weapons, man, what an introduction. Nothing will ever fill his boots, ever.
  However, other scifi I have enjoyed - Cixin Liu - The Three-Body Problem, Mary Doria Russell - The Sparrow, Michel Faber - The Book of Strange New Things & Under the Skin and Alistair Reynolds - House of Suns.
  This one is a little weird but someone put me onto Gene Wolfe and his Shadow of the Torturer series and I thought it was a great read.

  I have several times tried looking for similar authors to Iain. I can remember one occasion when I complimented an author on Goodreads and said he reminded me of Iain’s Culture books, but I am buggered if I can remember who that was, and nor can I find the comment on Goodreads. But I did some more research after reading the comments to this ABB upload, and Peter F Hamilton’s name cropped up a bunch of times. I can’t remember if I have read/listened to any of his books, but I found a well seeded 12.9Gb upload on ABB with 19 (I think) titles, plus lots more, so I am looking forward to trying them.

  What I would _really_ like to know is if Apple are ever going to go ahead with their option to make TV series of the Culture books. Any news about that? The Foundation TV series was excellent, and there is every reason to think the Culture books would make amazing TV.

  @TD666 the closest might be Cixin Liu’s trilogy. I’ve just finished them and was told that banks would be the closest thing to read next

  Amature uploaders, these novels are for the most part mono, they are recorded in mono.

  So why are you wasting half the bandwidth on a cloned channel?

  You realize every modern MP3 player will duplicate the mono in stereo for you without wasting the Storage or quality.

  You can just record the audio in 64-bit, and not a soul will know the difference other than half their storage space has come back.

  Please encoders it’s not rocket science.
