Some things to consider about Big Finish…
Ms. Kathleen Anne Grady has been managing director for 15 years. I’ve been in business for 25 years and from where I sit she looks to be doing a brilliant job. If you look at their financials (Big Finish, Ltd), they are charging exactly what it costs them to produce. They’re keeping a zero cash balance, so they’re literally doing everything they can with every shilling, not taking ANY profit that I can see.
So, it’s more of a service. We need to figure out a way to have it both ways. Whilst obviously strongly sympathetic to their situation, I’ve had lots of great ideas that don’t turn a profit because of the state of technology at the moment. That’s just the natural order of things. But we’re a little more savvy and dedicated, I think, than the average consumer, so we should care more.
I spend $50,000 a year providing a service for the BBC, simply because they will not do it. I registered as a non-profit and use charitable donations to make up the shortfall. BF is more like that, imho. It’s a service, though run as a for-profit business. Bottom line, threats aren’t the way to go. I would be sick with grief if I had to shut down what I do, but I wouldn’t threaten those that use it to “Pay up!”. If they don’t and I can’t continue, that’s their problem. I did my best.
Your biggest asset is your good will. Leverage that. This is a different kind of company with a different kind of client, they need a different kind of solution.
Ideas? Let’s make this work for everyone!

I’m confused…..it comes down to threats now. I suggest that everyone give this website a rest. It’s not worth all the hassle. They put a threat on the last few postings and the forum. They are watching this site like Hawks. It would be a shames for anyone to get into trouble or banned for sharing BF material. I would never ask anyone to risk themselves. Nor would I take that risk. Everyone be very cautious. They are looking to catch someone and use them as an example and it could be very costly to the loser.

It isn’t a threat, it is us defending our releases from theft and free worldwide distribution to countless masses by those who don’t seem to care about the harm that they are doing us, and the legitimate risk they pose to future releases made to the same quality and frequency.
We are a company that operates on a razor’s edge, financial speaking, almost everything we make goes immediately back into creating future releases and paying the talent involved and associated costs. Our financial situation could blow over in a strong wind. We aren’t the BBC or some giant corporate backed studio with buckets of cash at our disposal, every financial hit we take, we feel. And publicly torrenting our material to countless masses and potentially costing us who knows how many sales hurts us.
If you are fine with that, we probably can’t stop you. But don’t expect us to be fine with it, and don’t expect us to not defend ourselves where we are able to do so. And complaining that we are ‘making threats’, just because we advise that anyone caught torrenting our material risks having their accounts closed is akin to someone who robbed your house complaining that you don’t invite them around for tea any more.

Anyone really in that position would not be using such crude metaphors. Yeah, you can “rob my house”…if it means I’m going to get more replacement donations than I ever had stuff stole! We create a buzz more than we hurt sales. Keeping up with the series means that when we finally *can* afford it, we’re still interested. This is the 21st century. Intellectual property isn’t “stuff”, it’s intellectual property. There are plenty of better metaphors to draw on.

And for those amongst you who don’t seem to be very good with metaphors, it is not your house being robbed, it is ours. You are the thieves sharing our goods amongst yourselves. As such, please explain to me how we get more than we ever had stolen? The issue is that you take, and take, and take, even a great many of you who could purchase, but “why buy something when you can get it for free?”, and as a result we don’t get anything. In fact we lose sales. And yet you still expect us to create future releases that you can likewise take without paying for, while claiming that your actions, and our diminishing sales, will have no long term consequences. Despite the reality being that we struggle with such consequences when budgeting our future releases and plans every single day.
As we have said before, it does have a consequence. It does hurt us financially. It does put added pressure on some lines and place them into jeopardy. If you don’t care about any of that, then you don’t care about it. We can’t force people to care. But don’t kid yourself that these torrents aren’t doing us any harm when they are. And do. And will continue to do so.
We have made our case as best we can, and there really isn’t anything else to say. If people ignore our message then so be it, and come what may. But the next time a series you claim to be a fan of is cancelled because of low sales, that’s on you, and on all of those who do nothing but take without giving back. Everything has it’s price, and every action has it’s consequences. And ignoring them doesn’t make those consequences go away.

It is a fact that there is also a rival site operator that has planted bogus/infected torrents here and generally tried to decrease usage by increasing paranoia.
One thinks that the most likely reason a post in the forum would be deleted is because the IP address matched one of those known trouble makers.

This bickering is enough. BF is oh so glad their plan to stop the torrents has succeeded. What is the reason on blaming anyone for the torrents drying up? All the arguing is just causing undue attention to this site. The ones providing the material decided they did not want to risk being caught if BF or anyone threats were real or not. One way or another this site was going to be found out. It doesn’t matter if someone informed BF or they found this site on there own. What’s done is done. The best way to end it is to carry on, using a proxy server. I subscribe to the agent provocateur theory. How does planting fake torrents get them anywhere??? It’s about the posters, not the downloaders.
If that was the intent it would be very easy to add a super/subsonic tag that identified each copy as a part of the mastering process.
I’m a paralegal and if someone want to cause problems for a bittorrent user, I say bring it. I’d love to get them in court and establish some case law around it. Bittorrents are not file downloads. The details matter in legal affairs.

OK; not going to argue this. It’s just a fact, and forget how I know it- some of us have a lot more to lose than you think- but BF have not been posting on here.
This has become the go-to site for Big Finish audios and there are a number of rival site operators that want that traffic. They were instrumental in the “failure” of m’toast site. They have been planting crap on here to spread paranoia.
Rest assured, this is about competing site, not copyrights. I have spoken with a number of key players at BF and they confirm they would never get into this kind of mud wrestling. They would just bring legal action, but that’s not their style.
And, rest assured too, I know the identities of the agent provocateurs. They will find rather a lot of payback coming in the next few months.
If you let this debate influence you, then they have won. Just think about that. Some fucking Putinbot will effectively shut this site down because he can lie long and hard enough. I say, go right on, and kick the first Russian you see in the nuts!

So, what happens now is that your paranoia works, people stop posting. Hey, lately the BF stuff has been mediocre. I’ll live without it. I’ll learn to forget it. Actually, you know what? I’m done.
And in walking away, the only thing I regret is that I never registered a name back in the day to say thank you to those who uploaded, either in the torrent posts or the upload thread, but instead downloaded everything in silent appreciation, like I suspect most people do, or did.
Maybe that’s why I felt the need to defend those who uploaded from those who have taken so many petty and unfair shots at them, because when they were sharing I didn’t say thank you, but I should have. And just because they’re no longer uploading, that doesn’t mean they deserve all this backlash from people who only seem to support those who share for exactly as long as they continue to provide them free stuff, and then as soon as that stops, they turn on them like vipers, with countless accusations and insults thrown over their names and reputations and past efforts for no reason at all. Other than, they’re no longer uploading stuff.
To me, that’s just a low act. Lower than low. And I felt an overwhelming desire to call those acting that way on their rubbish behaviour. That I then instantly became part of the grand conspiracy should have tipped me off that there is no point arguing with crazy, and I should have walked at that point, but some people are just so objectionable in their actions and behaviour that it’s hard to stand by and let their hate get a free pass unchallenged. It would be like silently endorsing it. And I wouldn’t do that.
But the point has been more than made, so I’m going to take the lead of another poster on one of the other BF threads and walk away now, because if there is one thing I have realised, it’s that their own words and actions hang them more than anything I, or any others, could ever say in response. So no more oxygen on this from me. Hate on. Blame me. Blame whoever. Make up names and motivations and try to force your square pegs into those stubbornly round holes until the end of time. For all the impact it won’t have. But just know that every so often someone out there reads this craziness, and just laughs at you and shakes their head. Which is about all the reaction such antics ultimately deserve.
